Why do teams look for Defender alternatives?
The reasons are in Microsoft's own documentation. Agentless VM, secrets and Kubernetes scanning, attack path analysis, AI-SPM and code-to-cloud mapping sit in the paid Defender CSPM plan, and agentless server scanning in Defender for Servers Plan 2, so the free Foundational CSPM tier is not a like-for-like comparison with a full CNAPP. From 27 October 2026, Foundational CSPM becomes opt-in for new Azure subscriptions, a natural point to review what is switched on. On our scores, seven of the eight alternatives score higher on runtime protection depth and seven on risk prioritization. Defender is native to Azure, so its case is strongest in Azure-first estates.

When should you stay with Microsoft Defender?
Stay with Defender for Cloud if most of your estate runs on Azure, you already use Microsoft's security stack, and cost predictability matters: it leads the matrix on pricing transparency (4.6) and scores 4.3 on ecosystem. Before comparing, price the plans you would actually need, Defender CSPM and Defender for Servers Plan 2, rather than the free tier.
